What Melody Valentine (Asha Bromfield) and Valerie Brown (Hayley Law) have been up to since we last saw them in Riverdale Season 2? Clearly practicing their vocals and choreography, as you can clearly see in Decider’s exclusive clip from tonight’s new episode.
Entitled “The Return of the Pussycats”, the hour finds Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), now an international music superstar, abruptly returning to Riverdale for mysterious reasons. Once there, she reconnects with the old gang, including Melody and Valerie who fell out of the series quite suddenly in the middle of Season 2. Don’t worry, everything that is touched on in the episode – and it’s clear here that Josie is realizing her old back – ups are now stars in their own right.
Located in the Whyte Wyrm, a bar below the Pop’s Diner, Melody rocks it on Dua Lipa’s 2020 hit “Physical” from the album Nostalgia for the future, with Valerie joining her later in the clip. The song itself was written by Dua Lipa, Jason Evigan, Clarence Coffee Jr. and Sarah Hudson, and was inspired by the ballet film. Lightning dance.
Here, we see Valerie and Melody bring their own flavor – and their own backup dancers – to tune, which literally brings Josie’s jaw down in shock. And there’s a good chance your jaw will drop too. While Bromfield and Law were staples of the first two seasons, the Pussycats, and even Josie, were often on the narrative side. Even when Valerie briefly dated Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), the focus was much more on the Core Four (Archie, Jughead, Veronica and Betty) and the weird and sinister mysteries they were investigating, than the rise to power. Pussycats.
However, as mentioned, this episode changes all that and provides #JusticeForThePussycats. The iconic trio is no longer on the sidelines; instead, they’re front and center, and that not only means Josie takes center stage, but Valerie and Melody get intrigues, stories, and inner lives of their own that are unique to them. much more than a support system for Josie.
It is not the first time Riverdale also used Warner Music recording artist Dua Lipa on the show. “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” starred in Season 2, Episode 12 at Veronica (Camila Mendes) ‘s confirmation party, while “Don’t Start Now” starred under another Whyte Wyrm dance sequence in the Season 4, Episode 13. Maybe of note (or maybe not) the last episode that Valerie and Melody were seen in the series was Season 2, Episode 11, so are the Pussycats reprising Dua Lipa? Or, you know, maybe having the best time playing for Josie.
You can watch the full performance above, and Riverdale airs “Le Retour des Pussycats” tonight at 8 / 7c on The CW.
