The ten tenors: hits of all time in harmony in 10 parts | Rutland Reader

The Ten Tenors’ sleek renditions of some of the best songs in music history sweep across genres on their current tour, “Love Is In The Air,” at the Paramount Theater in Rutland at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 2.

The dynamic show features a mix of classical pieces, rock, pop and musical theatre. Since forming The Ten Tenors in 1995, the group has headlined more than 2,500 performances worldwide and celebrated its 25th anniversary last fall.

One of the tenors, Michael Edwards, opened up about his singing roots and what it’s like to be part of a band with such longevity in a recent email interview.

“I started singing in school and church choirs,” he said. “It gave me a solid foundation in part singing and I really understood how important singing is. Of course getting a featured solo is great, but if people don’t sing their parts well, the overall sound will not be impressive.

Over the years, there has been a natural rotation of the tenor line-up, and Edwards said, “The casting process is more for the band than for the show. We only rebroadcast if someone takes a break, to do a solo project or to participate in another show, generally.

“The process involves myself and the producer preparing the file and sending it out,” he explained. “Once we get applications, we go through them and if there are voices we like, we then send them show material to record for us. From there, we arrange live auditions for the shortlist.

But perhaps the most important part is the final part – the personality test.

“The last part of the process is taking them to the pub, having a few pints together, getting a feel for the person and figuring out if we could spend 8-10 weeks on a tour bus together.”

“Being part of The Ten Tenors… It’s been a lot of things,” Edwards said.

Some favorite moments included a show in Buenos Aires, where they didn’t know what to expect, and walked into an arena of 5,000 people going crazy for every song.

“It was awesome,” Edwards said.

Hear the finished product for the first time, every time a new album is recorded, and see how much money has been raised from the sale of their Christmas album for charities at children’s hospitals like St. Jude’s .

“I have traveled to so many places around the world that no other job would give me the opportunity to visit,” he added. “I’ve had the opportunity to sing and co-produce albums with the band, and I sing with nine of my best friends every night. These guys are my family, my best friends and my colleagues. We share a lot of life experiences, good and bad and I think these are friendships that will last forever.

The current tour setlist includes some of the most popular love songs of all time, classics like “All You Need Is Love”, “Unchained Melody” and “Somebody to Love”, all performed in 10-voice harmony .

“We work very hard and sometimes it’s exhausting, but seeing the responses on the faces of the audience at the end of a song, when it sends us back on stage, is the best feeling in the world.”
