Neural networks trained on everyday sounds and images from the world around us generate a constantly evolving hybrid ecosystem.
Tangled Others Studio was founded to unravel the complex entanglements between the human and the “more than human” world. neural artist Sophie Crespogenerative artists and former architect Feileacan McCormicksound artist Alejandro Mune and creative researcher Alan Ixba define an entanglement as “a complex state where no entity can be considered separate, or somehow unaffected, by any other entangled present”. Acknowledging the continual blurring of physical and virtual space due to the development of increasingly complex technological systems, Entangled Others asserts that “the rich substrate of weird and strange spaces between us and the non-human world cannot remain as an aesthetic space, our world cannot bear this self-imposed distance and denial of our intertwined state of ourselves and others. Instead, through a common generative artistic practice, the studio seeks to encourage and nurture an interconnected world in which the natural and the artificial, the human and the more than human exist in dynamic harmony.
Hybrid Ecosystems is a work in progress that is emblematic of this engagement with everyday entanglement. “The digital and physical world at first glance seem separate, occupying different layers of reality that seem to reluctantly interact, this is further reinforced by the way digital interfaces are designed,” the studio explains. “The reality of our mundane life is that these two layers of reality are in fact intertwined, influencing, interacting, constantly shaping and reshaping, constantly consuming and acting. Our inherited tendency to view the world as man-made, or artificial , as different from the natural world further obscures this reality where digital agents (software and hardware) behave and interact as an ecosystem, also with the natural world Aquatic life forms suggest themselves before quickly evolving into more complicated variations and blend seamlessly into man-made abstractions, intricate coral formations, and deep-sea organisms sharing space with oscillating circuit boards, formless electronics, and unrecognizable virtual interfaces.
“By inviting neural models trained on the vast mundane visuality of our world, i.e. with standardized datasets that are considered a benchmark for the status quo of our daily lives, we are attempting an exercise in re -imagination,” Entangled Others continues. . “Beginning well in the familiar, this exploration of neuro-speculative visions of reality attempts to manipulate and warp our banality into speculative representations of digital and physical entanglement: exploring how we can stretch our imaginations in order to see a world of interacting harmoniously. and natural life as a single sustainable ecosystem. Against the eerie and discordant tones of Alejandro Mune’s sound design, Hybrid Ecosystems approximates the experience of being submerged, not in the aquatic environment towards which the work beckons, but in the incessant currents of a tangled and harmonic environment.
