BENGALURU: In 2008, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, then former President, was in Vidhana Soudha to launch a state government initiative. During the event, Kalam was enthralled as he listened for 20 minutes to a Mysuru Police Band performing instruments in a corner.
Over a period of time, Mysuru Police Band, with a rich history of around 160 years, witnessed burnout due to lack of periodic recruitment, which adversely affected the quality of music.
The team is in Bengaluru to participate in the joint legislative session on Monday, which will be addressed by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot. They play compositions by Mysuru Vasudevachar, Muthiah Bhagavatar to Purandara Dasaru and Kanaka Dasaru, as well as a wide range of Western music.
The Mysuru Police Band, established in the 1850s by Chamarajendra Wodeyar with European army music, is probably the only band in the world to have musicians playing both Carnatic and Western instruments in large numbers. It was during the reign of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar that Carnatic music was included.
All We Want Is Some Recognition: Assistant Conductor
There are 27 different types of Carnatic instruments and around 30 Western instruments playing at the same time, which makes it unique. These include clarinets, piccolos, bassoons, saxophones, ultra saxophones, French horns and many more.
Deputy conductor R Mohan, who plays both clarinet and veena, and a third-generation musician said his father, D Ramappa, and grandfather, R Dasappa, played clarinet respectively. clarinet and trombone. Mohan, with over 30 years of experience, was recruited into the Home Office. “Our group’s sanctioned post is 82, including 32 from the Carnatic Music team and 50 from the Western Music team.
The number of people working has been reduced to 56, including 11 new members, who were recruited last year. Previously, there had been no recruitment for 15 years. The state government should recruit once every five years, and only then will the seniors in the team be able to teach the newcomers,” he said.
A shortage of the required number of members also affected the quality of the music. Those with a higher Instrumental (Carnatic) grade can apply, while for the West it is Trinity London grade II exams. On important occasions like the first legislative session of the year, Kannada Rajyotsava, incumbent governor, Dasara and others, the band performs. Even practicing today for four to five hours, while carrying out additional police duties, Mohan said, “All we want is recognition from the Department of Kannada and Culture and the Indian Council for cultural relations.
