Jellyfish and Halloween go together like peanut butter and jellyfish.
With the concept of Halloween still in its infancy in Japan, it’s interesting to see what direction people are taking it here, such as with the creative and non-creative “Mundane Halloween” contests. Sometimes ideas get a little weird, like Sumida Aquarium, who decided to add jellyfish to the holidays.
I mean, can you believe it? I don’t know what they think a transparent pumpkin-shaped animal floating around like a ghost has to do with Halloween, but okay.
The main event of the Jellyfish and Halloween event will be Tokyo Aquarium’s Kaleidoscope Tunnel. This 50-metre (164-foot) corridor is normally lined with eight jellyfish tanks and around 5,000 mirrors to give the effect of being surrounded by jellies, but from October 1 to 31 it will be themed scary holiday.
The tank background will feature haunted mansions and forests with the jellyfish doing what they do best by floating around ethereal. Halloween music will also be playing in the kaleidoscope tunnel to help complete the atmosphere.
In addition to the tunnel, Sumida Aquarium will also launch the “Seven Mysteries of Jellyfish” exhibit.. It teaches us some of the more mysterious aspects of jellyfish biology, such as their body full of “eyes” and the fact that they don’t have a heart – which could explain why they can never be part of Football team.
And with an interest in jellyfish knowledge piqued, it’s time to head upstairs for the Kurage Kurabe (“Jellyfish Comparison”) workshop. Right here, participants can make their own jellyfish mobiles and learn even more about the anatomy of these fascinating cross-species creatures.
And if you have time, you can take your mobile back into the tunnel and do an entirely jellyfish recreation of the new candy man movie.
It’s still too early to tell if the notion of Halloween jellyfish will catch on or not, but Sumida’s aquarium is definitely a strong argument in their favor. Maybe it’s better, too, because we’ll need something to replace the impending void in toy joke knives during future holiday seasons.
