High Point-based Silver Hare Racing finds its stride in the Trans Am Series

ALTON, Va. — The Trans Am Series made a stop at Virginia International Raceway on Sunday and for Silver Hare Racing it was a home game.

Silver Hare Racing is based in High Point in a building that was once a NASCAR store, but the team’s roots still trace back to VIR where its owners Laura Hull and her racer husband, Maurice, met.

Laura started the team in 2019 to give Maurice a way to expand and control his passion for racing.

They run 3 cars full time in the TA2 series which has nine races at tracks across the country. Drivers Michael Self and Tyler Kicera joined the team this year, as Maurice’s teammates.

“It’s a young team that builds. We have a great crew, a lot of energy in this team, young men who are ready to work, to win this, that’s what it’s all about, ”said Laura Hull.

“You know the races are really tight and the level of competition is extremely high and we race against people in the series who have raced in IndyCar and at Le Mans and so when you test yourself here and you succeed you know you ‘ I did something because it’s also competitive,” Kicera said.

Twenty-six cars raced at the VIR on Sunday, a highly competitive field attracting more attention with each event. Self, who is also the team’s general manager, says it will propel this series.

“It’s good to see this kind of car count and you come to these races where we get more fans which is really cool. The big thing TA2 needs is they need a sort of a TV package, but it has some of the best road racing in the United States right now,” Self said.

“The series is a diamond in the rough in the sense that the cars and the competition are just starting to get known and the guys from NASCAR come and race with us to get the experience,” Kicera said.

Several NASCAR drivers also raced or practiced with Silver Hare this year, using the team as a practice conduit for NASCAR road racing events.

“We had William Byron, Christopher Bell, Harrison Burton, all wonderful young men who came and drove with us. We’ve been testing, racing with them, and looking forward to doing more in the future,” said Laura Hull.

Bell credited his practice with Silver Hare with helping him win the Daytona road race in February.
