D Piano Girl Johanna is best known for her soca piano instrumentals, which she continues to create. But fans of the classically trained pianist revel in her latest original composition, “Stargaze”, which is a mix of classical and contemporary with some elements of trap music. The clip is unlike anything that has been done before. It was filmed on site at the historical monitoring station of Chaguaramas.

Even though the coronavirus pandemic put an end to her travel plans, that hasn’t stopped D Piano Girl from creating some great music. Last year, she broadcast live performances from her home and ended 2020 on a high note with a virtual concert featuring some of her students.

In an interview with Kitcharee, Johanna reveals the inspiration behind “Stargaze” and explains why music is a necessity, especially in these troubled times.

“During this pandemic, the thought that continues to haunt me is that even in the midst of this darkness, we are all in the same boat. It is a global situation that has affected every human being in one way or another. I have friends stuck outside Trinidad who have not yet been able to return home. On the one hand, it’s scary that this is happening to all of us, and on the other hand, we’ve been bonded together like never before because we are all going through this. We may be in different countries and live in different scenarios, but we are fighting for the same thing: the preservation of human life and the hope for a better future, ”she said.

“‘Stargaze’ symbolizes our journey as we hope, as we yearn for change as we evolve, while gazing at the same starry sky we all find ourselves under, knowing that we are never alone.”

To inspire and move

“Stargaze” first started out as a melody in the mind of D Piano Girl. As a musician, she wants her music to move and inspire people. With an instrumental piece, there are no words to convey a message, so the message has to be conveyed in melody, harmony and the way the composition flows, she explains.

“I sit at the piano and work on expanding the melody and chord progressions I hear in my mind, until they convey the emotion I want, until it feels like fair, ”she adds. One of his passions is putting music on visual images of iconic places in Trinidad. Fans of her music will remember the video of D Piano Girl performing her classic rendition of Kees’ “Savannah Grass” in the middle of iconic Queen’s Park Savannah.

“For ‘Stargaze’, the concept of the music video was just as important to me as the music itself,” says Johanna. “Stargaze” was filmed and edited by incredibly talented videographer Antonio Achee at the Chaguaramas Historical Tracking Station, in partnership with the Chaguaramas Development Authority. This abandoned radar base with its empty buildings might look dark, but it’s a great place to stargaze on a clear day.

In the music video for “Stargaze”, D Piano Girl is seen walking up the stairs to the tracking station which symbolizes our journey to find ourselves and our search for something greater than ourselves. She observes the glorious night sky and returns as a changed person, realizing that we all exist in the same universe … and that we have the power to make changes and radiate light during dark times, says Johanna. .

Thanks to the musical orchestration of Geiron Mang of Mang Productions, the mood of the song changes to reflect the transformation of darkness into light. During the video editing process, D Piano Girl sat down with the videographer and spent almost an hour making sure that a 15-second video footage looks, feels and transmits exactly what she imagined.

“I believe it’s the combination of music and visuals that makes ‘Stargaze’ what it is, and I’m very grateful to the team who worked with me to make it happen,” she says.

D Piano Girl Johanna has been playing the instrument since her childhood. The pandemic has reinforced his belief that music is not an extravagance but a necessity, especially in these uncertain and unpredictable times.

“For many, the pandemic has been a time of despair, uncertainty and loss. But music is a very powerful thing. It can uplift and inspire listeners, turn them on and calm them down. It can give artists a way to express their feelings. Music can turn a dark day into a day full of hope, ”she says.

No matter what comes next, one thing is for sure, D Piano Girl Johanna will continue to create music that is good for the soul.

“We must continue to create what is in our hearts and minds – you never know who you are going to inspire! ” she says.
